I could shorten this..stack the halved pieces....  I think I'm gonna play around with this idea as I'm not totally convinced that this would really work around here.  
Definitely sans wheels.  

Another interesting idea. 

I love our 30+ year old fridge for the aesthetics, but the color is wrong so this could be a perfect fix.

I'd use black chalkboard paint.
